But the current world map says theres an up and a down.
What does this tell you about the minds of the people who decided to put european cultures on the top of the map and the colonized ones on the bottom?

So my parents are from Ukraine but we live in the USA.Anyways I asked my friend why they call Russians European when it’s in Asia? And she said no they dont, and I disagreed. So I asked my teacher and she said yes they do,even though it’s not part of Europe.Than the teacher had a blank, confused look[probably cause she never thought about why they call them European?]And my parents tell me Russia’s in Europe but I know for a fact that it isn’t.If you look up ‘Map of Europe’,it has a part of Russia added to Europe. When you type in ‘Map of Asia’,it has all of Russia is with it.That’s what makes Asia the biggest Continent because Russia’s the biggest country that makes it so big!SoOOOoOo what’s your opinion.I’m not saying that I hate Russians or anything it’s just I hate when people call me Russian, when I’m not, cause they think it’s the same thing :S !!!

Medieval Period
Soldiers used, in this era of arches with the best protections. They built beautiful cathedrals with long corridors in a courtyard. There were several cemeteries that are still standing today. There were also several strucutre, which represented demons and religious. The churches had very large doors and very large windows, they had a world map represnetait plays all the world in a huge circle with roads. For example in Russia is represented by a polar bear, there were several drawings. Like angels, top, unicorns, and men with their faces in the middle of their bodies. There were also tables with the bodies of men and dogs’ heads “The dogs head.” They thought they were there and they lived on Earth and worked as a farmer, they took care of the animals, the hay… But this is just a myth. They also believed that the moon has been attacked by monsters, by demons. They were preoccupied with the moon. There were wonderful stained glass windows in churches, of all colors. They were believers. At this time there was no machine to write books. Then they were all books by hand. With the help of a pen and ink. There were also several beautiful drawings. In addition, the books were huge, very wide. The drawings repressentaient the greater part of the demons, monsters. The cathedrals were the Gothic style. They were very very high with huge windows. They are in good condition today. One can see that there were some gargoyles in height. We have books of that era who come from several countries, Western Europe, Paris, Italy … Arabic words have appeared in scientific language. They were geniuses who wanted to invent several new inventions. They were very strong in science. They made clocks, and sometimes even with an hourglass. It was now one of their clock, the oldest clock in the world! Who’s made a big pendulum. They calculated every second, every minute and every hour. Technologies were becoming bigger: cathedrals, catapults. The Mongols were very well equipped for war: good armor, horses, weapons … In the year 1348, there is the most tragic tragedy in the world: THE BLACK DEATH, more than 20 million dead! The painters have left several of their pictures, showing what a disaster! One can see people really sad and unhappy. Even when there were survivors. It was mainly in Europe. They said it was because of rats. It was burning people sick. Hopelessness reigned. Only God could help them. Infected persons was very very sick. There were balls that appeared on the body and they had a high fever. Even kings were infected. Everyone prayed that Gods aid but nothing happened. They put a variety of textures on their black Ball. We put several to death of this great tragedy in the pit. We can see today, with many skeletons. Sometimes they even punnai them to go away from this. People were full of blood. All patients died without exeption. The patients had their ball drill to remove the poison inside. The Pope proclaimed himself king. The Black Death was a very dangerous disease.

Welcome to CERN,
the world’s largest particle physics laboratory
First beam in the LHC – accelerating science
Geneva, 10 September 2008. The first beam in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN was successfully steered around the full 27 kilometres of the world's most powerful particle accelerator at 10h28 this morning. This historic event marks a key moment in the transition from over two decades of preparation to a new era of scientific discovery.
THIS STORY WAS TAKEN FROM THE INTERNET?
WHAT DO WE HAVE HERE?
WELL, FROM THE MASS MEDIA, IT LOOK LIKE THIS LARGE HADRON COLLIDER OR LHC CAN BE USE FOR MILITERY, SCIENCE AND NUCLEAR ENERGY.
MILITARY USE IN THE SENSE THAT MOSCOW COULD BE TURN INTO A BLACKHOLE IF A AIRBUS COULD CARRY THIS LHC INTO MOSCOW.
FROM THE INFORMATION GIVEN IT LOOK LIKE IT IS IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE THE SIZE INVOLVED FEW COUNTRIES IN EUROPE.
AS TIME GOES BY IT COULD BE MINITURISED INTO AIRBUS A380.
SECONDLY, SINCE OIL IS A BIG PROBLEM FOR ALL MANKIND THEREFORE LHC COULD BE TURN INTO NUCLEAR PLANT TO PRODUCE ENERGY FOR ALL NATIONS.
I UNDER THE TEMPERATURE IS 100,000 MORE THEN THE SURFACE ON THE SUN.
IF LHC COULD BE MINITURISED THEN THIS ENERGY COULD BE CONTAIN AND TURN INTO ELECTRICITY FOR ALL MANKIND.
THIRDLY, WE COULD BUILD GIANT LAZERBEAM FROM LHC THAT COULD DESTROY METEORITES ATTACKING EARTH.
ONLY TIME IS NEEDED TO BUILD THESE GIANT MACHINE TO SAVE MANKIND FROM UFO AND OTHER DANGEROUS ELEMENT FROM OUTERSPACE.
FOURTHLY, THESE UNDERGROUND TUNNEL FROM LHC COULD ONE DAY BE TURN INTO SUPERHIGHWAY FOR VEHICLES FROM
PARIS TO MOSCOW,
MOSCOW TO BEIJING,
BEIJING TO TOKYO,
BEIJING TO SINGAPORE
PARIS TO JERUSALEM,
JERUSALEM TO CAIRO
CAIRO TO PRETORIA,
JERUSALEM TO TEHERAN
TEHERAN TO NEW DELHI,
NEW DELHI TO SINGAPORE.
NEW YORK TO MEXICO CITY
MEXICO TO BUENOS AIRES
THE COST OF LHC IS ABOUT US 40,000,000,000?
THEREFORE FOR 12 CENTRES AROUND THE WORLD WILL COST ABOUT US$ 480,000,000,000.
AS TIME GOES BY IT WILL BE ABOUT US$ 1,000,000,000,000 (ONE TRILLION DOLLARS)
TODAY THERE ARE JUST TOO MANY ROAD ACCIDENTS.
HENCE, LHC SUPERHIGHEWAY COULD MAKE VEHICLES TRAVEL AT THE SPEED OF SOUND (750MPH)
WHEN VEHICLES ARE IN AUTO STATE THEN DRIVERS COULD TAKE A SLEEP FROM PARIS TO BEIJING.
LASTLY, LHC COULD BE TURN INTO GIANT BATTERY OR CAPACITOR?

In my history class on Friday I’ll be given a test wherein I am supposed to locate and identify English and European cities (ex: Cadiz, Lisbon, Paris, London, etc). I’ve been looking for blank maps of England and Europe, so I may practice before this surprisingly important test. Anyone know where I can find some that aren’t frustratingly tiny or grainy?

I have to memorize all the capital cities, and bodies of water (including rivers) of present day europe. We will have a quiz where i will have to identify certain markings on a blank map. however, I am having trouble finding an effective way of memorizing all this stuff, does anyone have any suggestions??
If you can answer any of those, or give a link to a source, that’d be absolutely fantastic. Thank you!
Most maps before the Age of Exploration only showed that of Europe, Asia Minor (Turkey & inc. Caucasus), and a portion of Northern Africa. However, Europe is technically bound with the Asian and African continents, which means transportation and communication is easier as compared to a Transatlantic route. With the utilization of the wheel and horse, Europeans should have been able have constant interaction with Africans and Far East Asians, and may have even settled there.
How come Europeans were unable to immediately discover and become in contact with other peoples of Far East Asia and the rest of Africa at a larger scale? Even if there is the Silk Road, and historical accounts & maps revealing as far as Southeast Asia, there has been very rare direct interaction between Europeans and the peoples in those mentioned areas of the world.
The period I’m talking about would be roughly around Bronze Age or towards its end (~2000BC) until Middle Ages (~1400AD).
I need to study for my AP European history class and I would also like the same map but blank. Thank you! please post the link.

HOW TO edit a BEST map of Europe
So I just had a dream that in the middle of Europe there was landlocked sea (doesn’t make much sense now) and in there there were Faroe islands (real country made out of small islands). I also checked if they have an airport in the capital but they didn’t so I went to ask my mom if we could drive there. So I came to the kitchen and my mom said “we are going to Faroe islands to see the dentist”. I was like cool, that’s what I wanted to ask you, if we could go there. And then my mom and my dad started discussing the road how to get there. My father said something that I laughed at (in the dream). Then, when I woke up and looked at the map of Europe (I have it right above my bad), Faroe islands, of course, weren’t there but I realized something else. The thing that my dad said (which I laughed at) was in English. Then I realized that probably the whole dream was in English, which is kinda weird because I live in non-english speaking country and I don’t speak english with anybody in here.

A lil help please. I keep finding enlarged maps and im not sure where it is.
I understand that ancient road maps were laid out by using a distant and stationary geographical structures or constructed site such as castles and church steeple(s) location(s).
In the laying out of roads using straight line of site, it would have been shown on ancient maps also.
I believe straight lines of sight were used where ever possible but I don’t think this is the actual term used. Do you know what this term was called?
If you know or know where I could find this information it would be most appreciated by me. I guess I could use a road map myself to try and find this out but I just don’t have it …yet!
Bless you in all that you do.
Thanks,
Ed
This summer i’m planning on driving across Europe. From (Oxford) UK to (Krusevac) Serbia. Has anyone done this before? What is the best route considering distance, quality of roads, tolls? I want to buy my husband a gps for Christmas. I wonder if I should get the Garmin 360 or 370? I would like to have the best option of traffic information so we can avoid blocked roads , but we don’t necessarily need the Europe map. I think maybe the 370 would be a good choice, or does the 360 also have traffic info? The price difference is about $60.

** NEW (Jan/2011) THIS VIDEO HAS BEEN CITED IN AN ACADEMIC ARTICLE (read more below) The link to the article is here: tinyurl.com TITLE: Democratic Public Discourse in the Coming Autarchic Communities ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this article is to tackle the problem of living together — as dignified human beings — in a certain territory in the field of social philosophy, on the theoretical grounding ensured by some remarkable exponents of the Austrian School ? and by means of the praxeologic method. Because political tools diminish the human nature not only of those who use them, but also of those who undergo their effects, people can live a life worthy of a human being only as members of some autarchic or self-governing communities. As a spontaneous order, every autarchic community is inherently democratic, inasmuch as it makes possible free involvement, peaceful coordination, free expression and the free reproduction of ideas. The members of autarchic communities are moral individuals who avoid aggression, practice self-control, seek a dynamical efficiency and establish (together with their fellow human beings) a democratic public discourse. need to find a map asappp. last day of summer vacation
This is for a class of mine that I am having trouble with. The teacher has given a list of citys that need to be placed on the map (okay easy enough) but the catch is that the MAJOR CITIES need to be in BLUE pen and the CAPITAL CITIES in RED.
What’s that supposed to mean? Aren’t they all just cities anyway?
The list is :
1. Glasgow9. Lyon17. Cologne
2. Edinburgh 10. Genoa18. Istanbul
3. Manchester 11. Milan19. St. Petersburg
4. Birmingham 12. Florence20. Odessa
5. Belfast 13. Venice21. Volgograd
6. Barcelona 14. Palermo22. Kiev
7. Seville 15. Rotterdam23. Minsk
8. Marseille 16. Munich24. Murmansk
If anyone is good at European history could you plase help me distinguish the difference and tell me which would be in blue (major)and which in red (capital). You can just list the numbers if you want. then I will find where they are in Europe and label away
It would be soooooo helpful )
most other countries have made the switch to the right side. I saw a map recently and noticed that all of mainland Europe drives on the right. What gives Britain? Wouldn’t it be easier to have a universal standard for driving?
Yes, Peon. Point taken. Japan and India drive on the left as well. However, most countries that drive on the left were forced to by their British colonizers. Even Japan adopted the left-side policy with Gunboat Diplomcay instituted by the British in the 1850s. Still, less than a quarter of the world uses the left side of the road.

I bought a Garmin nuvi 275t GPS which includes maps of USA and Europe. I’m looking at the Garmin site and wondering what the difference is between the Navigator maps (e.g. North America…) and the city maps (e.g. CityXplorer, Bay Area) and the water maps and the topo maps.
Does anyone know what the overlap, if any, is? Or a web page / site that explains it?
It appears that I have the road maps for those two areas, the equivalent of the City Navigator North America and City Navigator Europe. Would I then have to buy the CityXplorer London if I’m going to London and want additional POI, transit maps, etc. or am I covered with City Navigator Europe?
While I’m on a roll – do the topo and street maps interact nicely with each other? Or do I have to switch between the street maps and the topo maps depending on what I’m doing?
TIA.

This video is the result of our eTwinning project with a lot of european schools. We received all this postcards from our partners and made the video to show our project at school and to our partners. As we are a Portuguese school we chose to use the music people say is a part of our culture (fado) sang by a fado singer internationally known and awarded, Marisa. Another detail we want you to pay attention is to the Portuguese guitar that, unlike others, has 12 strings and it’s very difficult to play. We know that teenagers may not like it very much but will learn something about Portuguese culture. That is all this is about: intercultural dialogue! We hope you enjoy it. Reading Road Maps

]]>
I’m the navigator when we rent a vehicle and ramble on our travels, so reading road maps is something I’ve gotten fairly good at.
Why make an effort with a road map when you can use the latest GPS equipment? Well, for one thing, road maps give you the big picture. Lay a map out on a table, and you can see the whole country or region. It makes planning your trip simpler.
And what about when you’re on the road? Can’t you just program the GPS and forget about it?
GPSs are OK, but they do have their down side. They may take you right through a busy city instead of going around it. The GPS chooses the “shortest route”. It may not be the fastest…
May I contend that a navigator reading road maps sometimes comes in handy?!? We had this happen trying to find the Des Moines Airport in Iowa recently… Reading the roadmap and ignoring the GPS, we avoided driving through the city.
We had foreign friends who recently relied on their GPS to find their motel just outside of Yosemite National Park. The GPS insisted that their motel was 11 miles into the forest….. twice! TWICE they drove through town… right past their motel and into the forest. The third time, they started reading road maps and looking for themselves instead of relying on the machine, and guess what… They had driven right past their motel those first two times, just staring at the GPS… had they looked on the side of the road, there it was!
Sometimes you can get by with a map that isn’t really a road map! We were traveling in Mali, West Africa one time with a car and driver. He was a very good driver… that’s what we had asked for… which is whole different story….
So yes, he was a very good driver, but he had not traveled the country. When we left Mopti, he turned the wrong way. I was following along on our National Geographic map of the country, and it looked to me like he had turned the wrong way for Bandiagara. At first he said he was on the right road, but when he stopped to ask. Sure enough, we were on the right road…. going the WRONG way. Good thing I know something about reading road maps!
In the U.S. you will find that major roads are numbered with odd numbers going north and south… and even numbers going east and west. As freeways bend around cities this might look confusing. Look out to destinations beyond the city you are close to… that way you can tell whether you need to get on the northbound or southbound direction.
Traveling in Europe and other countries, maps will sometimes tell you the direction you’re traveling by naming major cities the highway is going to. Again, look out beyond that small section of the map toward the edges, so you’ll know which turn to take.
Major roads are in bolder lines, small roads are in thin black lines. Those small “black line” roads are scenic and fun to travel, but reading the road maps and finding your direction is more of a challenge to the navigator. We contend that if you get used to reading road maps, you can get anywhere!
